So Many Sandy Vaginas!

Posted by fringefamous on 9th August 2008

Holy cow!

Since we’ve posted our first ever FringeFamous Fringie nominations, we’ve had an outpouring of concern regarding the rules.  “How did you pick these?”, “You didn’t see enough shows!”, “I was really good, but wasn’t nominated!”.

We’ve received tons of emails.  People have left us messages using the “call us” button.  We’ve even had a few comments left.  And you know people are overly excited when they leave a comment.  So I thought I’d help clear things up for those of you who feel left in the dark.

  1. First of all, we did see enough shows.  FringeFamous.com, as a whole, saw a full one-third of all Fringe shows this year.  If we didn’t see your show, it’s because you had zero buzz.  It doesn’t mean your show sucked.  It doesn’t mean you aren’t a good actor.  But it does mean that you had zero buzz.  If you had any buzz, we saw your show.  We didn’t review every show we saw because if you see that many shows, you don’t have much time to do anything else.  We reviewed what we loved, what we hated, and a few shows in between that we thought people might want to know about.  As I stated at the very tip top of the Fringie Nomination post, it’s very likely we missed something good that was hidden away deep, deep in the Fringe forest.  Too bad for you.
  2. We’ve had a few people whose diapers are dirty at the fact that the same shows keep showing up in a lot of the Fringie categories.  I’ll explain.  The best shows usually have the best performers and/or the best direction and/or the best script and/or some combination of those.  That’s what makes them the best.  It’s pretty rare to see a super crappy Fringe show with an awesome individual performance (although, we did hate Deviants even though we thought Megan Odell was fantastic).  Make sense?
  3. Commenter Tim says:  “How do you pick the shows? Is it only shows you see? That kind of bites. If you are to do this you should have to see all the shows and not just the ones that are popular”.  What Tim might not understand is that this is our blog.  I mean…it’s ours.  We own it.  We get to do whatever the hell we want inside of it.  We only “have to do” what we want to do, and nothing more.  If you have a problem with our Fringie nominations, my suggestion would be to click on over to Wordpress.com and start your own blog.  You can hold your very own MN Fringe Festival Awards.  You could play music and have a barbecue and give the awards out to all your favorite shows.

In other words, this is a blog, people.  It’s a fucking blog.  We’re not the New York Times.  We’re not the Tony Awards.  We’re five people.  Theatre is subjective.  Your mom thoroughly enjoyed your show.  Everything’s gonna be okay.

Now take a deep breath and rock out the final two days of the MN Fringe.
