Everyone’s A Critic. Literally.

What qualifications, would you suppose, are required to be a theatre critic? Would you need a journalism degree; maybe a minor in theatre? Is it possible that you’d need to study English or maybe take a couple theatre history classes? It’s likely that all you’d really need is a computer, a blog, and an opinion.
But what if you were a professional theatre critic. Maybe you’re a theatre critic that writes for a three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper in a major metropolitan area that prides itself on its “journalism excellence”. Surely then you’d need some sort of journalism degree, right…or at the very least, a little experience?
One of our loyal readers (god, you guys are great) forwarded us this email from a theatre critic over at the Pioneer Press.

As you can clearly see, the only thing required to be a theatre critic (at the Pioneer Press, at least) is…I dunno…maybe some sort of writing utensil.
So just remember: if your Fringe show gets labeled “Avoid Like the Plague”, you can take some comfort in knowing that the review could’ve been written by someone who has absolutely no idea what they’re talking about.
