CHANHASSEN MOVING TOWARD FABULOUS
The Chanhassen Dinner Theaters is getting pretty gay (in a good way). My ruby-bedazzled Vans began to sparkle when I heard that Chan will be putting on The Producers this year! For a theatre that has an average audience age of 163, The Producers seems to be a daring choice.
Thank Goddess!
I can’t wait to see the dentures fall from the wrinkled mouths during “Keep it Gay”. My only fear is that the geriatric crowd will laugh at the homosexuality of the show (”Look,
Marge. That gay is so silly”), rather than with the genius gays poking fun at gay theatre (”Keep it light, keep it bright, keep it gay”).
But just as Julie Andrews belted out with gusto “I have confidence!”, it’s about time the Chan gets a little rainbow fabulous. Yes, CDT already had a little gayness in it (Cats, anyone?), but that’s to be expected of a musical theatre venue. But this season is ram-packed with joy for this gay theatre-goer. Who doesn’t love sequins and tap shoes (42nd St.). Hot boy bands? Yes, please (Altar Boyz)! And, of course, a gay Hitler always has a place on my dance card (The Producers).
Well done, Chanhassen Dinner Theaters. Get your gay on!
