Guthrie BFA Program = Job At Guthrie

Posted by fringefamous on 13th April 2008

midsummer.jpgWord on the street is that the Guthrie has re-imagined A Midsummer Night’s Dream by setting in…wait for it…PRESENT DAY! I have to be honest, I just plain didn’t think it could be done. Fairies with tatoos? Mechanicals wearing tennis shoes? The brass over at the G must’ve had their thinking caps on 24/7 for this one.

Another thing I noticed while perusing the program, was the amazing number of cast members that came from either the UofM/Guthrie Theater Actor Training program or the Guthrie Experience for Actors in Training; a whopping 13 out of a cast of 21.

Tickets for A Midsummer Night’s Dream range from $29 to $49. Tickets to see a show in the UofM BFA Program’s season range from $0 to $0. Yeah…they’re free. So somewhere between the Rarig Center and the Guthrie, the going rate to watch these actors skyrockets.

It’s sorta like getting your hair cut at the Aveda Institute. You save a few bucks while Cindy is learning, but as soon as she graduates and moves down the street to the big blue designer salon, that same trim costs you an arm and a leg. Call me crazy, but $50 seems a little steep to watch what basically amounts to a glorified senior showcase.

Me? I think I’ll start seeing theatre over at the Rarig Center. The view might not be as great, but at least I can see a Guthrie show for free.
